Choosing the Right Blast Guns
Blast guns are compact blasting devices designed for targeted cleaning, rust removal, surface roughening, and surface preparation on a wide variety of surfaces. They are frequently used in situations where a large blast pot is not required or where particularly flexible work on small to medium-sized workpieces is needed. Depending on the design, the abrasive is fed via a suction lance, a dedicated abrasive container, or directly from the circulation system of a blast cabinet.
Selecting the right blast gun depends primarily on the application site, desired surface coverage rate, abrasive media, nozzle, and available compressed air supply. Mobile applications have different requirements than those for use in a blast booth or in automated processes. Therefore, it is advisable to first determine the specific application and only then select the nozzle size, container size, and accessories.

Blast gun with a suction lance or an abrasive hopper?
In a blast gun with a suction lance, the abrasive media is drawn in from an external container. This keeps the handheld device compact and allows for flexible selection of the abrasive media supply. Such systems are particularly practical when different container sizes or changing work locations are required.
In contrast, complete systems with their own abrasive media hopper consist of a single unit comprising a gun, hopper, and hose assembly. Depending on the hopper size, longer operating intervals can be achieved before the abrasive media needs to be refilled. However, the size of the hopper does not determine the actual blasting performance. This is primarily determined by the nozzle, operating pressure, and available air volume.
Blast guns for blast cabinets
Special manual guns are available for enclosed blast cabinets. They are used inside the blasting chamber and operate in conjunction with the cabinet’s abrasive circulation system. Typical applications include cleaning, rust removal, matting, and surface preparation of smaller components.
For cabinet blasting guns, the air jet and blast nozzle must fit together precisely. This combination affects abrasive intake, air consumption, the blast pattern, and achievable performance. The material of the blast nozzle also plays a role: more wear-resistant materials are particularly beneficial when using abrasive blasting media and during frequent use.
Automatic guns for repeatable blasting processes
Automatic blast guns are used when workpieces need to be processed repeatedly under conditions that are as consistent as possible. They are suitable, for example, for automated or semi-automated booth processes. In these applications, consistent settings for air pressure, nozzle size, abrasive flow rate, distance, and processing time are particularly important to ensure reproducible results.
Wet Blasting and Extraction for Special Applications
For certain applications, blast guns are available with an additional water connection. In suitable applications, adding water can reduce dust generation and adapt the blasting process to sensitive work environments. Whether dry or wet blasting should be used depends on the material, the degree of contamination, the abrasive media, and the subsequent surface treatment.
Vacuum blast machines combine the blasting process with direct extraction. The abrasive media and removed particles are immediately recaptured at the point of processing. Such systems are particularly useful when only small areas are to be processed and the free dispersion of abrasive media and dust is undesirable.
The nozzle, abrasive media, and compressor determine the blasting performance
The most important technical factor for a blast gun is the available compressed air. A larger nozzle or higher operating pressure offers no advantage if the compressor cannot consistently supply the required volume of air. If the pressure drops during blasting, the blasting performance decreases and the abrasive feed may become uneven.
The abrasive media and nozzle must also be compatible. Grit size, flowability, and abrasiveness influence the blasting result, feed performance, and nozzle wear. Dry, free-flowing abrasive media ensures more reliable feeding and reduces malfunctions in the injector system.
