Blast nozzle, Blasting Capacity, and Compressed Air Requirements
The blast nozzle is the point at which compressed air and abrasive media are accelerated to operating speed. Its inner diameter significantly affects the air flow rate. Smaller orifices require less compressed air but result in lower surface coverage rates. Larger blast nozzles can handle significantly more abrasive media and air, but require a correspondingly powerful compressor.
When designing the system, one should not consider only the compressor’s theoretical free air delivery. Pressure losses in lines, water separators, valves, couplings, and blast hoses also play a role. A power reserve helps maintain a stable working pressure directly at the nozzle.
Venturi blast nozzles and various nozzle lengths
Venturi geometries specifically accelerate the air-abrasive media stream and are frequently used in professional pressure blasting applications. Short Venturi nozzles are compact and suitable even in confined workspaces. When properly designed, long Venturi nozzles can support high exit velocities and efficient surface treatment. Double-Venturi designs offer another design variant for specific blasting characteristics.
Tungsten carbide, silicon carbide, or boron carbide?
The nozzle material affects weight, brittleness, and wear resistance. Tungsten carbide is robust and a proven choice for many industrial applications. Silicon carbide combines high wear resistance with comparatively low weight. Boron carbide is used when particularly long service life is required, for example with highly abrasive media. The most cost-effective choice therefore depends on the abrasive media used, the duration of use, and the working conditions.
The connection and thread must match the nozzle holder
Various connections are used in the professional blasting sector. Our product range includes, among other items, blast nozzles with 25 mm coarse thread, 50 mm coarse thread, 3/4-inch fine thread, and 1 1/4-inch fine thread. JOS blast nozzles form a separate group within the product range and are available in versions with a ¼-inch female thread. Depending on the model, swirl blast heads are available with a 50 mm coarse thread or for a blast hose with a diameter of 16 × 7 mm. Before purchasing, you must verify which connection is compatible with your existing system. Hose-insert blast nozzles are attached directly to the designated blast hose without a traditional screw connection.
Four Points for Nozzle Selection
✅ Nozzle geometry suited to the surface and desired blast pattern
✅ Bore diameter matched to the available compressed air flow
✅ Nozzle material compatible with the abrasive media and duration of use
✅ Threaded or push-fit connection compatible with the existing nozzle holder or blast hose
Specialized Nozzles for Specific Blasting Applications
For hard-to-reach geometries, standard straight nozzles are not always sufficient. Angle blast nozzles direct the blast laterally and assist with hidden surfaces or internal contours. Internal pipe blast nozzles distribute the blast for machining internal surfaces. Wet blast nozzles and wet blast heads allow water to be added directly at the nozzle. JOS blast nozzles are available as Piccolo, Micro, and Standard nozzles for JOS blasting systems and cover a range of working intensities and nozzle sizes. Swirl blast nozzles set the air-abrasive media stream into rotation and are suitable for particularly gentle, fine-grinding cleaning tasks on more sensitive surfaces. Hose-insert blast nozzles are available for compact hose systems.
Check the nozzle bore for wear regularly
A blast nozzle is a wear part. As operating time increases, the bore may enlarge. This increases air and abrasive consumption while altering the blasting behavior. Regular inspection of the inner diameter helps to detect unnecessary energy consumption and performance loss at an early stage. ABS Strahltechnik offers blast nozzles and compatible accessories for professional blasting applications and provides support in matching the nozzle, abrasive media, blast hose, and compressor.
