ATEX fans as Part of an Explosion Protection Strategy

ATEX fans are used in applications where explosive atmospheres caused by flammable dusts, gases, or vapors may occur. Their selection is therefore always part of a comprehensive risk assessment. An ATEX fan labeled as compliant alone does not automatically make an extraction or ventilation system explosion-proof.

Important Application Data

✔ Type of substance: dust, gas, or vapor

✔ Zone classification and required equipment category

✔ Flow rate and pressure drop

✔ Medium and ambient temperature

✔ Potential ignition sources and electrostatic charge

✔ Integration into filters, piping systems, and discharge systems

Looking at the system as a whole

In addition to the fan, a safe extraction system includes capture elements, piping, filter systems, shut-off valves, grounding, discharge, and controls. Interfaces between these components can be just as relevant for explosion protection as the fan itself.

Flow rate and pressure remain critical

Even an ATEX fan must generate the desired airflow against the actual system resistance. Piping, filters, and capture elements determine the operating point. A design that complies with safety requirements is only functional if the flow-related sizing is also correct.

Electrostatic Charging and Grounding

Electrostatic charging can be a significant ignition source. Conductive connections, equipotential bonding, and the suitability of adjacent components must therefore be integral parts of the protection concept.

Common Planning Mistakes

✔ Assess ATEX compliance only for the fan

✔ Do not clearly define zone divisions

✔ Incomplete documentation of material data

✔ Neglect grounding and equipotential bonding

✔ Do not take the pressure loss of the entire system into account

Changes to the process

Different materials, new extraction points, or changed operating conditions can alter the risk situation. Therefore, following relevant changes, it should be verified whether the existing design remains suitable.

FAQ

When is an ATEX fan required?
If the risk assessment indicates that explosive atmospheres may occur and a suitably designed fan is required.

Is an ATEX fan alone sufficient?
No. The entire extraction or ventilation system must be taken into account.

What information is needed to make a selection?
Zone, material type, relevant material data, flow rate, pressure drop, temperature, and installation conditions.

Does grounding play a role?
Yes. Electrostatic charging can be a source of ignition and must be taken into account in the overall design.

Can any ATEX fan handle dust-laden air?
Not automatically. Particle load and structural suitability must also be appropriate.

Does the application need to be reevaluated if changes are made?
If there are relevant changes to materials, processes, or system configurations, a reassessment may be necessary.

Consulting on ATEX fans

To make a reliable preliminary selection, we need information on the zone, material, temperature, flow rate, pressure drop, and existing system equipment. The final selection must be consistent with the workplace hazard assessment.
