How does whirl blasting work?

In vortex blasting, the compressed air stream inside the nozzle is set in rotation by a vortex generator. The blasting particles are distributed throughout the rotating air stream and are thus directed across the surface in a controlled and uniform manner, rather than concentrated at a single point with maximum intensity. The result is a fine-grinding cleaning effect with significantly reduced mechanical stress compared to a conventional straight, circular blast.

This controlled blasting effect is a significant advantage, particularly for natural stone, stucco, ornaments, facades, restoration projects, or other surfaces worth preserving. The actual cleaning intensity also depends on blasting pressure, nozzle configuration, abrasive media, grit size, water addition, distance, and working speed.

Three blasting patterns with a basic nozzle

The vortex blasting system can be adapted to different tasks by replacing specific components:

Swirl blast nozzle – rotating jet for cleaning that is particularly gentle on surfaces

Flat blast nozzle – wide, spatula-shaped spray pattern for high surface coverage rates

Round blast nozzle – concentrated jet with greater abrasive effect

The flat blast nozzle shapes the round spray into a wide, flat spray with a spray width specified by the manufacturer of approximately 15 to 30 cm. The round blast nozzle, on the other hand, is suitable for applications requiring higher material removal rates, such as removing paint, rust, or plaster, as well as for roughening suitable surfaces.

Dry, mist, and wet methods

The swirl blast head can be operated both dry and with water added. This allows the process to be flexibly adapted to dust generation, the substrate, and the desired cleaning result. During mist or wet blasting, water can be specifically used to suppress dust and control the surface effect.

Especially when working on sensitive or unknown surfaces, start at a low intensity and test the settings on an inconspicuous test area. Then, gradually adjust the pressure, water flow, and amount of blasting media to achieve the desired result.

Design of Swirl Blasting Machines

Radler & Ruf’s swirl blasting machines are based on professional low-pressure blast machines and come equipped with all the components required for swirl blasting. These include, among other things, a pressure regulator, an abrasive metering valve, a water separator, a remote control, and the swirl blast head—which is fully mounted on the blast hose—complete with a nozzle holder, vortex body, water control, and a post-rinse unit.

The 45°-angled hopper bottom, together with the vibrator, ensures an even flow of abrasive. The finely adjustable abrasive metering valve allows for on-demand metering and helps reduce unnecessary abrasive consumption.

Those who primarily work in the traditional manner with a round blast nozzle can make do with a standard low-pressure blast machine. However, if sensitive surfaces, varying blast patterns, or dry, mist, and wet processes are to be handled with a flexibly adaptable system, the swirl blasting system offers significant advantages.

What should you look for when making your selection?

Of particular importance are vessel capacity, maximum tank pressure, blast hose diameter, desired nozzle configuration, and the available compressed air supply. The swirl blasting machines we offer—with capacities of 24, 60, and 100 liters—differ, among other things, in their water separators, abrasive metering valves, blast hose lengths, and blast hose diameters. Therefore, the specific application should always be taken into account when determining the actual configuration.
