Abrasive Metering Valve: The Key to Cost-Effective Abrasive Feed
In compressed air blasting, the abrasive media must be mixed into the compressed air stream in a controlled manner. This task is performed by the abrasive metering valve located at the bottom of the blast pot or in the abrasive delivery path. Too little abrasive media reduces the desired effect, while too much abrasive media does not automatically lead to better performance. An overloaded air stream can increase consumption and make the blasting process inefficient.
Different valve designs for various blast pots
Professional blasting systems use a variety of metering valves. The product range includes classic sand metering valves, disc-type sand metering valves, and various industrial valve series such as FSV, MP, Quantum, PT, Micro, and other systems. They differ in design, adjustment mechanism, connection size, and compatibility with the respective blast pot.
When replacing an existing valve, the exact model series is therefore more important than mere visual similarity. Adjacent pipe nipples, tees or Y-pieces, and couplings may also be part of the respective boiler configuration.
Connection sizes ranging from compact to large systems
Depending on the boiler size and system design, different connection sizes are used. The current product line includes, among other items, metering valves with 1/2-inch, 1-inch, and 1 1/4-inch connections. However, the connection size alone is not sufficient as a selection criterion, because the valve design and control concept must also be compatible.
The type and grit size of the abrasive influence the dosage
Fine, lightweight media behave differently during metering than coarse or heavy abrasive media. Grain size, bulk density, and flow characteristics influence how far a valve must be opened and how stable the material flow remains. For moisture-sensitive abrasive media, the quality of the compressed air also plays a major role, because clumped material can disrupt the metering process.
As little abrasive media as possible, as much as necessary
Proper adjustment ensures a consistent flow of abrasive media without wasting material unnecessarily. The optimal setting depends on the nozzle size, operating pressure, abrasive media, and desired surface finish. Therefore, a new adjustment may be necessary after changing the nozzle or abrasive media.

Wear and Tear on Blasting Media
All parts that come into contact with the blasting media are subject to abrasive wear. Valve bodies, metering areas, pipe nipples, and seals should therefore be inspected regularly. A worn metering system can cause uneven material flow and make adjustment difficult.
