Low-pressure blast machines are particularly versatile blasting systems when the mechanical impact on a surface needs to be controlled and finely adjusted. They are frequently used for restoration, historic preservation, facade cleaning, wood, natural stone, brick, metal, renovation work, and the removal of graffiti or coatings. What is crucial here is not merely the lowest possible operating pressure, but the ability to adjust the pressure, abrasive media, nozzle, and abrasive media flow rate to suit the specific surface.
The current product range spans from very compact microblasting units with a 0.7-liter vessel capacity to large low-pressure blast machines with a 200-liter vessel capacity. Low pressure does not just mean working with minimal pressure
A common misconception is that a low-pressure blasting machine can only be used at very low pressures. However, many professional systems have a wide pressure range. In the current product line, some machines start at around 0.1 or 0.2 bar and, depending on the model, can be operated up to approximately 6, 7, or 7.5 bar.
This allows for a wide range of applications using a single system. Delicate surfaces can first be tested and treated with low impact energy. For more robust materials or coatings with stronger adhesion, the pressure can be increased within the permissible range. In this way, modern low-pressure blasting machines combine the precise controllability of a microblasting system with blasting power sufficient for many more demanding applications.
Tank size primarily determines operating time and mobility
The vessel capacity of a low-pressure blast machine is often confused with its power. In fact, the vessel size primarily determines how much abrasive media can be stored and how often it needs to be refilled during operation. Small vessels are particularly portable and are suitable for detailed work, restoration, or changing work sites. Larger machines reduce interruptions and are more convenient for longer blasting jobs.
The actual blasting performance, however, is determined at the nozzle. Nozzle bore diameter, operating pressure, abrasive media, and available air volume determine how much energy and abrasive media strike the surface. A 200-liter unit is therefore not automatically more aggressive than a smaller system.
Match the abrasive media and grain size to the substrate
For blasting that is gentle on the material, the choice of abrasive media is just as important as the set pressure. Hardness, grain shape, and grain size significantly influence the surface finish. An abrasive media that is too aggressive or too coarse can cause unwanted material removal even at low pressure. Conversely, a suitable fine abrasive media can enable highly controlled cleaning.
For sensitive or unknown surfaces, always start with moderate settings and evaluate the results on an inconspicuous test area. Afterward, the pressure, distance, angle of impact, and amount of abrasive can be adjusted gradually.
Design the nozzle and compressor together
Even a low-pressure blast machine requires a continuous supply of compressed air. The air demand depends largely on the nozzle bore diameter and the operating pressure. As the nozzle bore diameter increases or the pressure rises, the required flow rate increases significantly. Therefore, it is not enough to consider only the maximum pressure of a compressor. The actual available flow rate during continuous operation is the decisive factor.
A sufficient power reserve helps maintain a stable operating pressure during blasting. Compressors that are undersized lead to pressure drops and, consequently, to fluctuating blasting performance. Hose diameters, couplings, and pressure losses in the supply line should also be taken into account during the design phase.
Dry compressed air improves process stability
Moisture in compressed air can impair the flow of abrasive material, especially when using fine abrasives. For this reason, some low-pressure blasting machines in our product line already feature built-in refrigerated air dryers or can be combined with appropriate compressed-air treatment systems. Dry air reduces the risk of clumping and promotes a more even flow of abrasive material.
