Condensate Treatment in Compressed Air Systems

Compressed air condensate is produced during the compression of air and the subsequent cooling process. This condensate accumulates in air receivers, filters, dryers, and sections of piping, among other places. To ensure that the compressed air system operates reliably, the condensate must first be drained from the respective collection points. If it contains oil or other operational contaminants, appropriate treatment or disposal is then required.

The Condensate Treatment category therefore combines two related but technically distinct tasks: condensate drainage and the treatment of oil-containing condensate. The current product range includes various condensate drains, oil-water separators for 1 to 30 m³/min, matching replacement kits, and a diagnostic test.

Condensate Drain: Remove Liquid from the Compressed Air System

Condensate drains are installed in locations where liquid accumulates. Their function is to remove condensate from the compressed air system as reliably as possible. The product range includes various operating principles, including timed drain valves, a mechanical float drain, and level-controlled condensate drains.

Timed systems open at predetermined intervals. The current TD and TD Combi models are rated up to 16 bar and for applications up to 60 m³/min. A mechanical float-type drain operates based on the liquid level and does not require electronic timing for its basic function. The ED condensate drains in the current product line cover flow rates from 10 to 30 m³/min at a maximum pressure of 16 bar.

Deriving is not the same as processing

A condensate drain removes liquid from the compressed air system but does not automatically prepare this liquid for further treatment. Especially in the case of oil-lubricated compressors, the resulting condensate may contain oil components. Oil-water separators are used for this purpose.

It is important to distinguish between these two functions: First, the condensate must be reliably collected and removed. Then, a decision is made on how it should be treated or disposed of based on its composition and the requirements applicable at the site.

Oil-water separators for 1 to 30 m³/min

The current WOS systems cover compressor systems ranging from 1 to 30 m³/min. They are used to treat oil-containing compressed air condensate by separating or binding oil components. The appropriate size is selected based on the expected load and the intended operating conditions.

Even an oil-water separator is not a maintenance-free component. The treatment medium used has a limited absorption capacity and must be replaced based on operating conditions. For this reason, suitable oil-water separator replacement kits are available for WOS systems in the range from 1 to 30 m³/min.

Check processing capacity

The existing water quality test can be used to monitor treatment performance. Such checks are useful because the actual contamination level of the condensate can be influenced by the compressor type, oil, operating hours, environment, and system condition. Regularly checking the system’s condition and maintenance needs is therefore more important than a purely calendar-based approach.

The more effectively moisture is removed from the compressed air, the more condensate can accumulate at specific points in the treatment process. Compressed-air filters, cyclone separators, refrigerated air dryers, and air receivers should therefore not be planned without a suitable concept for condensate drainage. Condensate management is thus an integral part of the entire compressed air station.
