Selecting and Combining Compressed-Air Filters Correctly
A compressed-air filter should not be selected based solely on connection size. The key factors are the level of contamination present, the required flow rate, and the desired compressed-air quality at the point of use. The DFF series enables multi-stage filtration with four different functions. This allows individual filter stages to be used specifically for their intended purpose or combined into a multi-stage filtration chain.
Depending on the model, the available sizes cover flow rates ranging from approximately 1.2 to 36 m³/min at a maximum pressure of 16 bar. To ensure proper sizing, the filter must match the actual operating flow rate. A filter that is too small increases pressure loss and can unnecessarily raise the operating costs of the entire compressed air system.
DFF-P: Coarse filter up to 5 µm
The DFF-P is the first filter stage for coarser solid particles. The specified filtration rating is 5 µm. It is suitable as a prefilter to protect downstream micro-, super-, or activated carbon filters, as well as other components of the compressed-air treatment system, from coarse contaminants. No specific residual oil value is specified for the DFF-P; its primary function is coarse particle filtration.
DFF-M: Microfilters up to 0.1 µm
The DFF-M handles the finer filtration of particles and aerosols. The specified filter fineness is 0.1 µm. Additionally, under the specified conditions, a residual oil content of < 0.1 mg/m³ at 20 °C is indicated. This stage is useful when fine water and oil aerosols, in addition to solids, need to be significantly reduced.
DFF-S: Superfilter up to 0.01 µm
The DFF-S is available for higher purity requirements. Its filter fineness is 0.01 µm; the specified residual oil content is < 0.01 mg/m³ at 20 °C. Due to the significantly finer filtration, the raw compressed air should already be sufficiently pre-filtered. This reduces the load on the filter element and helps ensure a cost-effective service life.
DFF-A: Activated carbon final stage for compressed air with particularly low oil content
The DFF-A operates differently from the P, M, and S models. It is designed as an activated carbon final stage for the further reduction of residual gaseous oil and hydrocarbon components. At 20 °C, a residual oil content of < 0.005 mg/m³ is specified. The DFF-A is therefore used after appropriate pre-filtration and does not replace a coarse, micro, or super filter.
Possible filter combinations
✅ DFF-P – basic coarse protection up to 5 µm
✅ DFF-P → DFF-M – Coarse plus microfiltration down to 0.1 µm
✅ DFF-P → DFF-M → DFF-S – very fine particle and aerosol filtration down to 0.01 µm
✅ DFF-P → DFF-M → DFF-S → DFF-A – additional activated carbon final stage for compressed air with particularly low oil content
Not every system automatically requires all four stages. For robust pneumatic tools, a simpler filtration system may be sufficient. Sensitive control systems, painting processes, measurement technology, or other quality-critical applications, on the other hand, may require multi-stage filtration. The required combination always depends on the required air quality and the contamination level of the incoming compressed air.
Filter stages protect each other
A multi-stage filter chain offers a significant economic advantage: The coarser filter captures the high dirt load before it reaches the finer and more sensitive filter element. This prevents unnecessary strain on micro, super, and activated carbon filters. At the same time, pressure drop remains more manageable. The available manifold connection kits enable the compact configuration of multiple DFF or DFS components.
Take filter elements and pressure loss into account
Filter elements are wear parts. As the load increases, the differential pressure across the filter rises. Replacing them in a timely manner maintains the desired filtration performance and prevents unnecessary energy losses. Compatible replacement filter elements are available for the individual DFF stages P, M, S, and A.
Filtration is only one part of compressed-air treatment
Compressed-air filters remove particles and, depending on the stage, aerosols or oil components, but do not produce a defined pressure dew point. Free condensate can be reduced beforehand using a cyclone condensate separator; refrigeration or desiccant air dryers are used for targeted drying. The technically appropriate sequence therefore depends on the particle, water, and oil contamination levels, as well as the required compressed-air quality at the point of use.
Compressed-Air Filters for Industrial and Professional Applications
With the multi-stage DFF filters, compressed-air quality can be specifically optimized from coarse filtration through very fine aerosol filtration to activated carbon adsorption. Key factors include the filtration rating, residual oil target, flow rate, operating pressure, and the correct sequence of the individual stages.
