Abrasive Media and Accessories – Materials, Recovery, and Process Control

A high-performance blasting system consists of more than just a blast pot, nozzle, and compressor. The abrasive media used plays a key role in determining the rate of material removal, the resulting surface profile, and the cost-effectiveness of the process. At the same time, recovery and process control determine how well a once-set result can be maintained during daily operation.

The “Abrasive Media & Accessories” category therefore brings together three technically related areas: the selection of suitable abrasive media, systems for recovering and recycling used media, and testing equipment for surface roughness and nozzle pressure. Each of these tasks has its own subcategory and a clearly defined product range.

The right abrasive media determines the effect

Abrasive media differ significantly in hardness, grain shape, density, fracture behavior, and the surface finish they can achieve. Angular abrasive media typically produce a stronger cutting effect and a more pronounced roughness profile. Round or bead-shaped abrasive media interact differently with the surface and are frequently used when cleaning, compaction, or a more uniform finish are the primary objectives.

Our current product range includes, among other items, corundum, glass beads, crushed glass, garnet abrasive, ceramic beads, soda, walnut shell abrasive, plastic blasting media, and silicon carbide. The choice of the appropriate blasting medium depends not only on the material being treated. Desired material removal rate, surface quality, blasting equipment, nozzle, operating pressure, and potential for reuse must also be taken into account.

Consider grit size and blasting methods together

The grit size affects both the blasting effect and the resulting profile. However, a larger grit size does not automatically mean a better result. Material that is too coarse can unnecessarily damage sensitive surfaces, while an unsuitable fine grit size can lead to low surface coverage rates when dealing with thick coatings.

Equally important is the technical suitability for the respective blasting system. Injector units, blast pots, low-pressure systems, and recovery systems place different demands on particle size, flowability, and material properties. The entire system should be considered, especially when using fine, lightweight, or highly dusty media.

Abrasive recovery can make material reusable multiple times

When using suitable reusable blasting media, abrasive recovery can make the material cycle significantly more cost-effective. Used media is collected and—depending on the system used—separated from dust, fine particles, and foreign matter. The portion that is still technically usable can then be reintroduced into the blasting process or stored temporarily.

The product range includes stationary vacuum recovery systems for blasting rooms, models with additional pre-separators or storage silos, as well as solutions for direct extraction from the workpiece. Not every abrasive media is suitable for an unlimited number of reuses. Grain stability, contamination, and condition after blasting determine whether reuse remains technically and economically viable.

Inspect the surface profile after blasting

For subsequent coating applications, simply stating that a surface has been “blasted” is often insufficient. The specific surface roughness profile that was actually produced can be a decisive factor. In the “Testing & Measurement” subcategory, surface comparator discs are available for the visual and tactile assessment of blasted surfaces in accordance with ISO 8503. Separate grit and shot versions allow for comparison with surface structures produced using different methods.

A comparison disc is no substitute for a high-resolution profilometer, but it offers a quick, practical way to compare a blasted surface with defined reference areas.

Evaluate nozzle pressure rather than just compressor pressure

Another important consideration is the actual pressure available at the blast nozzle. Pressure losses occur between the compressor and the nozzle due to air treatment, piping, couplings, fittings, and the blast hose. Therefore, a compressor pressure that appears sufficient may result in significantly lower blast performance at the nozzle.

A nozzle pressure test gauge allows for monitoring under actual blasting load. This is particularly helpful for troubleshooting, comparing different hose configurations, and after changes to the compressed air supply.

Select Abrasive Media and Accessories as a Complete System

To achieve reproducible blasting results, the material, equipment, and monitoring should not be selected independently of one another. The right abrasive media produces the desired effect; a suitable recovery system minimizes material loss when used with the appropriate media; and testing equipment verifies whether the surface and operating conditions meet the specified requirements.
