Transport fans for particle-laden airflows
Transport fans are designed for applications in which the airflow may contain dust, chips, or other particles. Particle size, abrasiveness, and material density influence wear, the required transport speed, and the fan’s structural suitability.
Typical Applications
✔ Extraction of chips and particles
✔ Pneumatic conveying in piping systems
✔ Dust collection systems for raw air containing particles
✔ Wood, plastic, and machining processes
✔ Material transport between collection and separation
Conveyor Speed and Wear
The air velocity must be high enough to keep particles in motion and prevent them from depositing in the piping system. At the same time, abrasive or heavy particles increase the mechanical stress on the impeller and housing. The material and design must therefore be suitable for the material being conveyed.
Here’s what you should keep in mind
✔ Particle type and particle size
✔ Abrasiveness and material density
✔ Required transport speed
✔ Flow rate and pressure drop
✔ potential imbalance and wear-related stress
✔ Temperature and Humidity
✔ Explosion protection for combustible dusts
Check pre-separation
In the case of very coarse, heavy, or abrasive particles, a pre-separator can reduce the mechanical load on the fan. Whether the fan is positioned before or after a separation stage depends on the process and the conveying task.
FAQ
Can any centrifugal fan be used as a transport fan?
No. The impeller and housing must be suitable for the respective particle load.
Why is air velocity important?
It must be high enough to ensure that particles are transported and do not settle.
When is a pre-separator useful?
If coarse, heavy, or highly abrasive particles were to place an unnecessary strain on the fan.
When is ATEX relevant?
In the case of combustible dusts or explosive atmospheres, the entire conveying process must be evaluated.
Consulting on Transport Fans
Material being conveyed, particle size, dust volume, piping network, flow rate, and pressure drop are the key selection parameters.
