Punktudsugning

Selecting and Sizing the Right Source Extraction System

With source extraction, smoke, dust, vapors, or aerosols are captured as directly as possible at their point of origin. The closer the capture element is positioned to the source, the more effectively the contaminated air can be captured, and the lower the total airflow required in many applications.

Typical product groups

✔ Source extraction arms for flexible work positions

✔ ATEX-certified models for appropriately rated applications

✔ Extraction hoods, extraction slots, and extraction panels

✔ Capture elements for machines and manual workstations

✔ Wall, ceiling, and floor mounts

✔ Extension arms, lighting, and connection accessories

The capture element and the process must be compatible

Welding fumes that rise due to thermal forces behave differently from heavy grinding dust or vapors that escape laterally. The shape, size, and position of the extraction system should therefore be adapted to the natural direction of dispersion. A movable extraction arm is particularly flexible, while a fixed hood often allows for more uniform extraction in recurring processes.

Flow rate and Pressure Drop

Extraction arms, hoods, hoses, piping, elbows, and filters cause pressure loss. Therefore, it is not only the rated capacity of a fan that is crucial, but also the actual flow rate at the extraction point. When multiple extraction points are operated simultaneously, the air distribution throughout the entire system must also be taken into account.

Here’s what you should look for when making your selection

✔ Type of pollutant and dispersion behavior

✔ Working radius and range of motion

✔ Connection diameter and required flow rate

✔ Pressure loss in the arm, hood, and ducting

✔ Connection to a fan or filtration unit

✔ Installation location and load capacity

✔ ATEX and grounding requirements, if applicable

ATEX and Special Applications

In the case of flammable dusts, gases, or vapors, the entire extraction system must be evaluated based on the risk assessment. A single ATEX component does not automatically make the entire system explosion-proof.

FAQ

How close should the data collection point be to the source?
As close as practically possible, without hindering the workflow. As the distance increases, the detection effectiveness decreases significantly.

When is an extraction arm a good choice?
This is especially true for manual tasks and changing work positions, where records must be updated regularly.

Can source extraction be connected to a central filtration unit?
Yes. Flow rate, pressure drop, and the simultaneous operation of multiple extraction points must be designed in conjunction with one another.

When is an ATEX-compliant version required?
If the risk assessment for the specific application identifies corresponding requirements.
